Takata Air Bag Recall Jumps from 35 Million to 40 Million Affected Vehicles
One of the largest recalls of all time continues to grow, now affecting 40 million vehicles worldwide. We first reported on this recall when it emerged in May of 2015. At the time, nearly 1 in 7 cars on the road were affected. The affected airbags can, on rare occasion, explode with so much force that the metal canister blows up, possibly sending shrapnel out into the vehicle. At least 100 injuries and more than 10 deaths worldwide have been tied to this malfunction.
To check if your car is under recall, type your VIN number in the NHTSA’s online tool to view any pending or current recalls. Dozens of models were affected, most of which were built between 2000 and 2011.

The towing capacity of these hybrids is limited to 2000 pounds, enough to pull a small teardrop trailer or small boat. We’re still getting used to seeing a hitch behind the Prius, but perhaps someday Toyota will introduce this towing package to the US.
