Defining “Wow Factor”

In case you missed it, the Rolls-Royce Ghost got a major overhaul last year for the 2021 model. Gone are the BMW 7 Series underpinnings. In their place Rolls-Royce has shifted their entry-level uber-luxury sedan to their own, company specific platform (shared with the larger Phantom and the Cullinan SUV). According to the famed coachbuilder, the only holdovers were the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament and the signature umbrellas.

Visually, the new Ghost is stunning while avoiding the gaudiness (garishness?) of sportier luxury options (I’m looking, snobbishly, at you Lamborghini Urus). The clean, reserved look of the Ghost neatly articulates the company’s description of the design philosophy behind the Ghost, which is “post opulence” in their parlance. And yet, the Rolls-Royce Ghost by any objective measure is still plenty darn opulent. In fact, so much so we thought the best way to understand this exceptional automobile was to explore all its amazing luxury features.

Sure, it’s got massaging rear seats and a quiet interior, but that’s all par for the luxury course. But the features below are what makes a Rolls a Rolls-Royce.

Power and Poise

The Ghost, like all Roll-Royces, is perfectly adapted to chauffeuring its owner from garden party to polo grounds to masquerade ball in otherworldly levels of comfort and quiet. But the Ghost is almost as enjoyable from the driver’s seat as it is from the back. The driving experience is calibrated for maximum ease. Rear wheel steering makes this lengthy car more manageable on the road. Power comes from a 6.75L V12 making 563 horsepower and 627lb.-ft of torque, and while the Ghost isn’t aiming for sportiness it still moves with imposing authority when asked. Despite its massive weight (5,628lbs.), the Ghost can make the sprint from zero to sixty in just 4.6 seconds.

But what really sets the Ghost apart from other cars, even other luxury cars, is the almost uncanny smoothness and quiet of the ride. The car sails spectrally over the road, unperturbed and placid to such a degree Rolls-Royce said they had to dial back some of the sound deadening because passengers found the near silence unnerving.

The Ghost achieves its glass-like smoothness thanks to a few special tricks. These include its Flagbearer camera system which monitors the road ahead and automatically adjusts the suspension. Rolls-Royce also fitted the double-wishbone suspension with additional dampers, so the suspension gets its own suspension. Another reason the ride is so smooth going is the GPS connected eight-speed transmission which monitors your position on the road and adjusts to the optimal gearing.

Exterior – Elegantly Aggressive

Like the rest of the car, the exterior of the Ghost is all about the details. What follows is our rundown of all the unique luxury features that make the Ghost distinctly a Rolls-Royce car.

  • The newly redesigned grille has backlighting, adding extra pop to the front end at night.
  • The Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament is now separate from the grille and automatically retracts when the hood is opened. It can also be manually retracted if you wish. It even has an anti-theft action that retracts the hood ornament if it’s tampered with.

  • Above the doors runs a thin rain trough (supposedly the exact width of a raindrop) to catch and divert water so that ingress and egress can be done without dampening your bouffant.
  • The RR logo on the Ghost’s wheels (and all Rolls-Royce cars) is weighted so that it stays perfectly upright.

  • The accent color on your white or black Ghost is a theme that carried throughout the car’s exterior and interior. On the outside there is only a very subtle single pinstripe line running the length of the car’s shoulder. You’ll find this color matches the key fob and the interior accenting.
  • The Ghost features automatic, power opening and closing doors. With a soft close, of course.

  • As in prior version, there is the signature umbrellas concealed in one of each of the rear passenger doors. These umbrellas are color matched to the accent theme, naturally.
  • Though not unique to the Ghost, the car also has rear hinged coach doors for your extra posh entrance to the Hollywood film premier.

Interior – Properly Pampering

The Rolls-Royce Ghost is a beautiful car to look at, but this is car meant to be ridden in more than driven or admired from afar, and it’s inside the Ghost that we find out what it means for something to the “Rolls-Royce of X.”

  • The accent color remains, subtle yet more prominent inside the Ghost with accent stitching, a small center leather seat patch, and a leather insert in the door panel.
  • The Spirit of Ecstasy finds her way into the cabin with embossments in the leather of the doors and on the seats as well as the infotainment knob. Like the RR logo on the wheels, the Spirit of Ecstasy remains stationary and fixed while the rotary dial moves around it.

  • Finely wrought metal, stainless steel and polished aluminum, and leather are used on every conceivable touchpoint and surface (other than the oddly cheap looking driving column stalks). Even the HVAC fan dials have soft leather on them.
  • The Ghost’s headliner is one of the literal highlights of the car. It features hundreds of individual LED lights arrayed into a starry night sky complete with its own shooting stars. You can even special order this headliner with the stars positioned to a specific date. That officially makes the Ghost the most baller anniversary gift I can think of.

  • The starry theme continues to the passenger side dash which features a gorgeous digital light display that also proclaims the Ghost name in bold, yet elegantly simple font.
  • The passenger seats each get their own plush carpeted floor mats. And while they may not age gracefully, when they’re brand new they add another level to this next-level luxury experience.

  • The rear seat passengers get both get infotainment screens neatly hidden within the back of the front seats, revealed with the touch of a button. These also fold out to provide a nifty little tray table from which you can eat your fancy open-face sandwiches. Just make sure you bring your own Grey Poupon.
  • Speaking of consumables, the Ghost also has the obligatory champagne fridge behind the rear arm rest, complete with crystal champagne glasses. The fridge comes with two different temperature settings, one for regular champagne and one for vintage champagne. Talk about “Champagne Problems,” right?

  • We already mentioned the Ghost rides quietly, but that doesn’t mean your ride has to be quiet. The Ghost comes with its own bespoke 1300-watt audio system featuring 18 speakers, including 2 exciter speakers in the roof, resonance chambers in the hollow door sills to augment the bass, and microphones to monitor and adjust the output for unmatched sound quality. There’s even a little volume dial next to the window control on the rear doors for backseat passengers.
  • And though you probably won’t ride in it, the trunk gets wall to wall carpeting, and yes, that includes the trunk lid.

The “Entry-Level” Rolls

Starting at roughly $350,000, the Rolls-Royce Ghost resides at the bottom of the company’s price chart. That makes the Ghost their “entry-level” model. Just think about that … rarified air indeed. But even from afar, and with a mixture of resentment and awe, you can’t help appreciating all the care and craftsmanship that goes into making the Rolls-Royce Ghost one of the most amazingly luxurious cars on the road.
